Last week, all of the Durham Academy 6th-graders went to Hillside Park to plant trees. Hillside Park also has a high school on the property. The park was built in 1922 and was the first high school to serve black students. We learned how to plant trees correctly, too. First, we dug a big hole a little bigger than the tree base. Then we gave the tree’s roots a message and loosened the roots. Next, we put the tree in the hole. Then we used all of the dirt from the hole to fill in the hole. After that, we built a donut with mulch around the tree to protect the tree from harmful weeds and high temperatures. Then we put a plastic ring around the tree trunk to protect it from animals. With that, we also did it in pouring rain, and it was very cold, but we stuck it out and planted a lot of trees. Thank you for reading my post and comment below if you have ever done service before.
On Saturday in North Carolina, we got hit big time with snow, so you know what that means… snow day today! Usually on snow days, I get my schoolwork done first, then I go play in the snow. My favorite snow day activities are sledding, snowball fights, and king of the hill. What are yours? Comment below and dress warm.
